5W's Personal Learning Projects

For the first half of Term 4, 5 White were exploring many different subjects as part of our Personal Learning Project. Our task was to select any topic we were interested in and find out more about it.
We were not allowed to just use Google and our iPads for the entire time. We were encouraged to enjoy our personal learning and create, design, paint, build, or whatever we wanted to do.

Some of the topics we explored included: electrical circuits, armoured vehicles, water filters, solar power, buildings, balloon powered cars, remote controlled cars, car design, mailboxes, jewellery making, a water feature, martial arts, marble tracks, magnet maze, Rube Goldberg machines, bird house, bird feeder, floral maze, seed experiments, model soccer field and a model tennis court!

Such variety from just 1 class!

In the comments section you can find out more from each class member about their Personal Learning Project.

  1. I learnt that I can accomplish anything in life no matter what gets my way.I would select a different subject that I am interested in next time.A problem in mine was the wheels kept on falling off so I had to put thumbtack in to the paper so the wheels wouldn't fall off.

  3. For my personal learning project I made a birdhouse for my cockatiel. I used:
    -paddle pop sticks
    - pva glue
Some of the problems I faced were trying to make a doorway for the birdhouse. My resolution was to cut off small parts out of paddle pop sticks, these small pieces held up the structure of the front and solved the problem. Another challenge I tried to solve was making one side of my birdhouse be level with the other side, so what I did was put two small parts instead of one small part. At first I didn't think it would work but it did

  4. While making my PLP I made no mistakes. But the materials I included where a solar power, fan, paper and cardboard. At first I was doing Potato power but I could only control 1 Volt so I then changed to different potato but that didn't work either,so that's why I did the World Trade Center.

  5. As I was doing my personal learning project I had many problems like the switch not working so I had to change around the switch and than it started working and the power went through to the light. I chose a electric circuit because it was something I was Interested in and didn't know about. I learnt some things about myself as a learner that I was a interestered in many different subjects.

  6. As I was building my water filter I had problems with leeks. I had to put tissues over the leeks. I found this project fun because we could do what ever we wanted and it was fun being able to build a model.

  7. For my personal learning project I made a marble run and I used
    -a box
    -toilet rolls
    -marbles
    -masking tape
    -flouro background
Some of the problems that I faced was when I tried to stick the toilet rolls on my box, solution was to get the masking tape and stick them on the box with masking. Another problem that I had , was I needed to use the paddle pop sticks for the border so the marble ball will not fall out of the box. I chose this marble run for entertainment and to just have fun. Next time I would choose to make a bird house because I love marking things like that and it looks really fun to make.

  8. I chose this specific type of activity because I had always been meaning to make my bird a birdhouse. Nextime I would like to build a model of something. I learnt that I can fix problems that I believe I can't
