5M's Stop Motion Animation

In Creative Arts we are making a Stop Motion animation using Lego figures.
Each group of students has been given a separate Lego set.
Our task is to make a storyboard which tells us a story.
Then we created backgrounds, prepared the characters and began taking the photos for the Stop Motion movie.

We are using the Lego Movie App to animate the images.

Success Criteria for 5M's comments:

  • Challenges and how you overcame them
  • What you enjoyed about this project
  • How well did your group work together?
  • What would you try differently next time?
  • If you could choose any topic or story for your next stop motion project, what would it be?

5W's Personal Learning Projects

For the first half of Term 4, 5 White were exploring many different subjects as part of our Personal Learning Project. Our task was to select any topic we were interested in and find out more about it.
We were not allowed to just use Google and our iPads for the entire time. We were encouraged to enjoy our personal learning and create, design, paint, build, or whatever we wanted to do.

Some of the topics we explored included: electrical circuits, armoured vehicles, water filters, solar power, buildings, balloon powered cars, remote controlled cars, car design, mailboxes, jewellery making, a water feature, martial arts, marble tracks, magnet maze, Rube Goldberg machines, bird house, bird feeder, floral maze, seed experiments, model soccer field and a model tennis court!

Such variety from just 1 class!

In the comments section you can find out more from each class member about their Personal Learning Project.

5W Students - make sure you check our success criteria before you add your comment:

  • Technical language
  • Vocabulary
  • Problems/challenges and how you overcame them
  • EDITING!!!!!!!!!
  • Picture, labels
  • What did you learn about this topic?
  • Why did you choose it?
  • What would you select next time?
  • What did you learn about yourself as a learner?

5 Maroon completed an open-ended maths task recently which involved using the Book Creator App to keep a log of their working and to prove and explain their Mathematical thinking. The task also required use of the iPad to find out information needed to complete the task.
It would be interesting to hear what you thought of completing the task using this app and did it help your mathematical thinking in any way using the iPad?

Which SMARTPHONE will we convince you to buy?

Year 5 have also been considering what their ideal SMARTPHONE would be like. After critiquing ads from various Smartphone companies such as Apple iPhone and the Samsung Galaxy they have now created their very own SMARTPHONE video advertisements.

Before creating their ads the students viewed and discussed some typical ads for modern smartphones as Mentor Texts to identify :
  • Some of the features of smartphones and also the techniques used by the advertisers to promote their product. These included:
  • Use of persuasive language ;
  • Use of descriptive and technical language;
  • Matching of images and text;
  • Use of visual codes such as the use of colour; offers and demands;
  • Making smooth and consistent visual transitions within  ads.
In creating their own ads the students:
  • Wrote scripts and created storyboards and then proceeded to learn to use the full iMovie (not iMovie Trailer) for the first time.
  • Learnt how to locate and attribute creative commons images
  • Created graphic content including original photos and movies
  • Included credits and image attributions (Unfortunately most of these credits have been removed for privacy reasons as some contained full student names - a lesson for next time!)
  • Critiqued one another's ads, giving descriptive feedback & sharing ideas and techniques to help each other make the best possible ads they could

 Below are some of our students' advertisements in a Playlist. We invite you to preview our ads to see which ones are the most convincing or the most creative perhaps.

Please share your comments about which is the best Smartphone ad and why you think so. We look forward to hearing from you.

Year 5 Crowd Sourced Book Recommendations

Check out the latest Book Recommendations from Mrs Gatt's Year 5 class. We crowd sourced this collection from our classroom and each created a slide for sharing.

Hello World _ Welcome to our Year 5 Blog

We would like to introduce you to our Year 5 Blog at Chisholm Catholic Primary School at Bligh Park - a suburb in the Hawkesbury District in Sydney's North West. Mr Galea and the students have started this blog so we can all share our work together with our families and the Chisholm Community. In our class we are part of  the iLearn Program and so we all have our own iPads for learning in school and we even get to take them home each day too. We hope you will enjoy seeing our work and invite you to give us feedback too.
